Music Review: The Heartstring Symphony

Tuesday, October 30, 2007 11:30AM - By Guest Writer

Music Review: The Heartstring SymphonyOn Wednesday, October 24th, I emerged from my home like a feminine Gollum from her posh Los Feliz cave. I was hung over and in the middle of watching Tom Hanks in BIG, but ventured to Tangier to absorb the superior live music of The Heartstring Symphony.

Songstress Heather Porcaro’s Heartstring Symphony explores the surreal and introspective landscape of her emotional life. The experience is a cross between Suzanne Vega, Clara Bow and a shooting star passing through a moonbeam.

Heather took the stage looking like an animated Erté fashion sketch in an opera-coat-esque dress with blooming sleeves, living doll tights, and a sparkling art deco headband.

DJ KrushHalloween is right around the corner! So you know what that means! DJ Krush at the Knitting Factory? Uh, I guess.

I’ve no idea why they would book him for a Halloween-night show. Couldn’t they do it the night before or after? I mean he always puts on a good show, but I’d think there are more fitting ways to spend your All Hallows Eve…

Music Review: The Necks – Sex

I didn’t always have eclectic taste in music. There was a time when my CD collection consisted of whatever KROQ happened to be playing that day. Thankfully, those days are dead and gone. I like to think I posses a hint of taste and refinement now.

To that end, I would like to share with you all one of my most cherished things: The Necks.

These guys are hot shit. They’ve been nominated and won a slew of awards throughout the world, and are spoken of in hushed and revered tones by their peers.

Music Review: Trying to Dance in Stilettos

Monday, October 22, 2007 1:00PM - By Guest Writer

Sander KlienenbergDear Reader,

Please look kindly on this non-review of the Sander Kleinenberg concert at the Avalon this past Saturday night. Please forgive my having bailed at a mere 1am, while the peppy young intro DJ was still on, pumping his fist in the air periodically, in admiration of his own mad skilz. My excuses are many (two midterms! boyfriend with bronchitis!) but the real reason I had to pack it in was I just couldn’t take any more of the shoes.

Yes, shoes.

Maybe I should back up, a bit. And try to describe to you my own difficulty in getting dressed for this weirdo post-millennial-retro affair. Because that’s the thing, it’s post-milial retro, which is hard to dress for. Even 90s retro has a template. But…Sander is kind of a god of rave, and rave is over. It’s in that weird zone where it can’t be referenced, it can just be a little out of date. So my reversible iridescent polyester & fake fur vest – was I supposed to wear that? And…glitter? Sincerely?

Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog, bringing the rock. (Photo courtesy of drdogmusic.com)

HUGE news for this weekend, folks. Huge. Bigger than Elvis, crawling out of his grave, a decrepit, jump-suited corpse, with a 6-string strung across his back. Bigger than Elton John dropping some science on Eminem.

Philadelphia’s only worthwhile musical offering ever, as well as the greatest little indie band to grace my ears, Dr. Dog will be performing at the Troubadour Saturday night! Tickets may, or may not, be sold out.

God I love Ameoba records. I know it’s like saying “Boy I love not being stabbed!”, but really, I love the place. Incredible selection, knowledgeable staff and USED CDs! Yay!

So here’s a little gem I stumbled upon purely by accident, picking it up only because it looked similar to another CD I had purchased recently.

So who are these guys? Turns out they’re a little duo from Alabama (or as it’s know, ‘Bamy) consisting of Nathan “Nabob” Shineywater (on guitars and vocals) and Rachael “Rabob” or “Rabinyah” Hughes (on Fender Rhodes and vocals), two hippy friends who like to hang out, get high and play music.

Lost Weekend:A Beruit Music Experience

Monday, October 15, 2007 8:30AM - By Guest Writer

Beruit-The BandCame back, ears mildly ringing, from Beirut’s show at the Avalon, which was peopled with a thousand hipsters and Douglas Smith of Big Love, who I noticed mainly as a secondary effect of noticing his girlfriend, one of the only people at the concert dancing, on the balcony. She was exultant, and unselfconscious, and so was he. Actually, he was kind of more than unselfconscious – he was ungendered. And it was wonderful.

Beirut lies, musically, somewhere between The Magnetic Fields and Kaiser’s Orchestra. Actually, you can triangulate by way of Broken Social Scene – there were like ten people on stage, working away intensely on brass instruments and violins. Beirut’s not really precious – because you need lyrics to be foremost for real preciousness and they’re more lost in mournful polka melody. So for a few moments, I truly got it, the sense of the draw of this new faux bohemian stuff, which is a complete rebuke to rock, providing a shelter from “adults” (because what Rolling Stones-adoring boomer could take more than fifteen seconds of it?) while obediently conceding that generation’s principal judgments. It’s music that says, “the world was conquered, and what falls to us is crocheting and philately, and modestly we embrace it.”
