“Manic Monday” by The Bangles

trans Stuck In Traffic Song of the Week Manic Monday

Keith: Sooo, “Manic Monday” at what point during this song do you eat a bullet?

Zach: That’s not fair at all, it’s an above average pop song, catchy, upbeat, I think it’s pretty good.

Keith: Come on, they’re singing about how they don’t want to go to work on Monday! Not exactly an original thought. The word is out, Mondays suck, deal with it!

Zach: Sure, lots of people feel that way and they aren’t breaking any new ground but still, when have you heard that in a pop song before? I don’t think there has been one. Mondays do suck and always will but at least there is an anthem for it.

Keith: If it’s Monday morning, and I’m stuck on the 101, hearing this song isn’t going to lift my spirits, it’s going to make want to drink some. Basically, the woman is saying she’s a whore, because she wishes she could lay around all day and get nailed instead of going to work and bettering society.

Zach: This song doesn’t make me think that if you bitch about Monday’s it makes them okay but plenty of people act this way, see if you can go the whole day without someone saying they wish they weren’t at work today or talking about how they wish the weekend was longer. And yes, if I had my way, I too would prefer to stay at home and get laid all day, the rest of society can go to hell.

Keith: What about the lyrics?? They make up words, “funday”, “runday” ok, you want to write a song about Mondays sucking that’s fine, but at least use real words. Not to mention, whose “funday” is Sunday? There’s nothing fun about Sunday other than football season. Friday, Saturday, THOSE are “fundays”, Sunday is the day of rest, the Sabbath, the end of the weekend. Sundays are “suckdays”.

Zach: That’s not true and I disagree that Sundays are ’suckdays’.

Keith: What if you work on Sunday? Some people work on Sunday and the Bangles are rubbing it in their face!

Zach : Well, them’s the breaks I guess, The Bangles can’t please everybody, but shouldn’t the people that have to work on Sundays agree even more that, “Yeah, Sundays are fun, this job sucks”?

Keith: I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on the Sunday thing, but we can agree they’re hypocrites. They complain about going to work then complain about “employments down” pick a side sister! Either you want a job or you don’t! No free rides in the land of the free you whiney bitches!

Zach: This is true but they are singing this song for those people, The Bangles don’t have to worry about the morning commute, they are rock stars (kinda).

Zach’s Last Hoorah: Manic Monday is an anthem for all those people in crummy jobs who don’t want to be there, which is almost everybody. While The Bangles might not be offering much solution or give any answers to how to escape the horrors of the start to your work week, they are singing about it in a pop song that will be stuck in your head all day long. The phrase ‘Manic Monday’ has been etched into the public consciousness which is a noteworthy feat on its own. It’s a song about enjoying the simple pleasures and trying to not let anyone grind you down and that makes it a good pop song.

Keith’s Last Ditch Effort: This song not only shouldn’t be played in a traffic jam, it should be banned from the airwaves and all copies of the track destroyed. Can you imagine thousands of years from now when historians are digging for artifacts to shed light on the people of the 20th Century, they come across a copy of “Manic Monday” by The Bangles. All the great discoveries we made go out the window and archaeologists conclude we were a primitive people because we passed the time listening to such miserable pieces of music. Hearing this song will always ruin my mood, no matter what kind of a “funday” I’m having.
