Know Your LA Bands: Voxhaul Broadcast Interview
By Seraphina L.
BeatCrave brings you band, Voxhaul Broadcast, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. These childhood friends have not only been making it around the LA music scene but they have been doing it with their own definite style. They self-proclaim their sound as “our version of soul music,” and their version has certainly been able to accrue devoted fans. Breathing psychedelia and soul into their music, David (vox/guitar), “Toe Knee” (lead guitar), Phil (bass), and Kurt (drums), make sure you’re able to groove to rock.
Voxhaul Broadcast will be playing The Echo this Saturday, September 27th, at 8:00pm with Rumspringa, The Franks, and Funeral Party. Now that is a killer combination of bands, so your excitement is totally justified. Check out BeatCrave’s interview with David and Kurt, and learn why you should pick up your slacker ass and head down to the show this weekend. While you’re at it, take in a viewing of their “Rotten Apples’ video below.
What are the first thoughts that come to you when you’re trying to pick a band name?
It’s hard to find a name that hasn’t already been used, so we just made something up that we liked.
What part of LA are all of you from?
We are originally from Orange County, but we live in Echo Park now.
Your latest album, Rotten Apples, was recorded live. Do you prefer this album over the last because it is live?
We are more into our new songs that we just recorded with Josh Ostrander from Eastern Conference Champions. We had a great time recording Rotten Apples live last year.
Where did the title, Rotten Apples, come from?
We were going to name the EP Shanty Town but decided in the end to name it after one of the songs on the record.
The hilarious video for the song involves one of those horses kids put in a quarter to ride. How did this vision come about?
Our director, Luke Asa Guidici, came up with the idea and did a great job incorporating all the old movie footage into the stuff that we shot.
How long have you all known each other?
Since we were kids. Tony and Kurt grew up on the same street. I [David] met them and Phil when I was 13.
What’s cooler? Having your music on vinyl or on iTunes?
I think vinyl often sounds better but I also like how you can find any song at anytime on iTunes.
Where’s the next place you’d like to have a residency?
The Grand Canyon would be nice, but we did have a great time at our Spaceland residency.
Give me three must-have songs on a soul/funk CD mix.
Only three? Al Green – “Love and Happiness”; Sam Cooke – “Bring It On Home”; Aretha Franklin ” Don’t Play That Song.”
Quick Fire Round:
What was the last book you read?
A bio of Neil Young.
What’s your favorite album you’ve ever bought?
Either Revolver by The Beatles or Pet Sounds by Beach Boys, can’t decide.
Who is currently your favorite LA band?
We have lots. Currently, Restaurant, Local Natives, Health, The Growlers, Union Line and War Paint.
What is your favorite LA newspaper or magazine?
LA City Zine, [now BeatCrave] of course. We are also happy that Kevin Bronson formerly of the LA Times is back with Buzz Bands at http://buzzbands.la.
What was the latest gift you bought someone?
A drink.
Cover bands: Lame or awesome?
Awesome, if the band is AC/DShe.
Tell us one thing about yourself we probably don’t already know.
In third grade my brother and I sang “Whoomp, There It Is” at a talent show. I am so glad I shared that with the world.
