Concert Photo Essay: Girl in a Coma, Tegan and Sara, City and Colour at the Henry Fonda Theater

Last night (October 18, 2008) , Girl in a Coma, City and Colour, and Tegan and Sara completed the third of their four-day residency at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood.
Girl in a Coma started promptly at 8pm, and the female trio showed their enthusiam throughout their set. Through riffs, vocals, and drums, the three ladies had audience members clamoring for more, even when they announced their last song.
Afterwards, bassist Jenn Alva went to the front of the stage to hand out the setlist and throw flowers into the crowd.
City and Colour was up next. The only member, singer/guitarist/harmonicist Dallas Green, also the frontman and guitarist of post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, opened to cheers and screams of audience members.
It was obvious that many of the concert-goers had been there for the last few nights. Many of them greeted the security guard by his name, and his warm return reaffirmed the camaraderie formed over the past few days.
Dallas had one of the nicest voices I had heard in a while. Tegan validated that argument later on, when she asked Dallas to join her on the stage for her acoustic encore performance.
The audience was antsy as they waited for Tegan and Sara to come out. When they finally did, an eruption of noise seemed to radiate from the audience. The ladies opened immediately with one of their most prominent songs, “The Con.”
For the next hour or so, Tegan and Sara played to an enthusiastic crowd. They stopped every so often to chat the audience up, even hugging one another at the coercion of the crowd. Sara cried, “We haven’t hugged since we were in the womb!”
At one point, the ladies calmed the crowd long enough to push for Barack Obama and voting NO on PROP 8. They pointed to the stickers on their shirts and shared an anecdote regarding their acceptance in high school as queer women.
Overall, the show was amazing. I never really had the chance to listen to any of these bands before, but I always feel like going to concerts is a make-or-break factor when it comes to listening to to music you’ve never listened to before. I feel like the artists all proved themselves to be worthy, and I look forward to hearing more of their work and seeing them again in the near future.
