Philanthropist, activist and occasional U2 frontman Bono has been asked by the New York Times to write some opinion columns in 2009. Radar is reporting that Bono will write the op-ed pieces for free and topics will include “Africa, poverty, and, importantly, the music of Frank Sinatra.”

The Times editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal, while speaking to journalism students at Columbia University also expressed an interest in getting Brian May of Queen, Bruce Springsteen and comedian Larry David to write op-eds as well.

U2 have been off the road for almost two years but have said that a new album is due out in 2009. In a statement on U2′s website, Bono said the music is less stripped down than the band’s recent work and more in the vein of The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. That sounds promising.

The band’s most recent release is an expanded DVD of the band’s 1983 concert film Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky containing 5 previously unreleased songs. It was released in September.
