The Smiths Reuniting For Coachella? [Update]
By KevinRumors of a Smiths reunion are flying today in the UK. The Sun is reporting that other original members of the band are close to inking a deal that would reunite the band for a one-off show at the Coachella Festival.
If The Smiths reunite for Coachella, it would be the first time in 21 years that Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce have played together. Reportedly, a huge sum of money and a new manager has been helpful in convincing Morrissey to agree to the gig. He supposedly turned down £2.8 milion (about $4.4 million) in 2006 to play the festival.
The Coachella Festival in Indio, CA will take place on April 17, 18 and 19 in 2009. Past festival reunions have included Rage Against the Machine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Stooges and The Pixies. The Rage reunion in 2007 drew a crowd of over 100,000, but there’s a good chance that The Smiths could top that. We’ll have to wait and see if this pans out.
UPDATE: Well that was debunked quickly. Sources close to the band and the festival have said that The Smiths are definitely not reuniting for Coachella. Johnny Marr’s manager called the rumors “rubbish.”
