Concert Review: The Monolators CD Release Party At Spaceland

Los Angeles’ Spaceland is always a fun place to party with your favorite east-siders and Saturday night was out of control with The Monolators and their CD release party. On October 25th, The Monolators released their new CD, Don’t Dance, but there was definitely dancing going on. With friends such as Correatown, You, Me & Iowa, and Summer Darling joining them for the night, the venue with shiny blue metallic drapes was filled with friends and fans.

On stage, there was a community as much as there was in the crowd. Without even starting the first song, lead vocalist, Eli, asked Correatown’s Wendy and Angela to join them on stage. The stage had to be happily crowded for the true show to start.

I have to admit it was only my first time seeing the Monolators live but I couldn’t have picked a better show. Eli’s long legs in red were kicking, Mary’s beats were as sparkling as her dress, Tom’s guitar riffs created strong leads behind the vocals and Ashley’s bass lines were incredibly satisfying. The stage couldn’t have had a more perfect look and sound to accompany such a celebration.

To end the set, they unveiled – get ready – a GONG. Yes, I’m serious. They not only banged on a gong (which surprisingly still fit within the music without sounding ridiculous) but invited more members from other bands to help them out. This included anyone who brought a bass guitar along for the night. (There was a long line of bass players on stage at one point.)

The Monolators brought their fun to the stage and really didn’t need a CD release to party. However, as previously mentioned, it was certainly a celebration and the fun was definitely well deserved.
