Well, the Wal Mart exclusive release model has worked again. AC/DC released their new album Black Ice last week and in its first week, moved over 784,000 copies.

It seems that the Wal Mart strategy works because AC/DC hasn’t moved that many albums in a long time. The Eagles were the first band to go Wal Mart exclusive with their album and to date, it’s moved over 7 million copies.

Wal Mart is a force to be reckoned with. We all know that. What is it about Wal Mart exclusive albums that make them so successful? They have a whole music section full of albums that don’t sell millions of copies.

This phenomenon is good for the already successful bands that can get the Wal Mart deals, but hurt smaller record stores who can’t stock albums by established acts.

Are the people who still buy albums in this country so fickle that they buy albums because there’s a big display in Wal Mart? Is guess the answer is yes.
