BeatCrave recently had the opportunity to check out the supremely popular and quite infamous Girl Talk at the Henry Fonda Theatre.  The idea of going to see a performer who doesn’t play a single instrument but  plays music that is originally someone elses seems quite odd.  Regardless of how strange it may seem, GirlTalk managed to sell out two nights in a row while he graced Los Angeles with his remixes of questionable legality.  The reason behind his ability to sell-out venues accross the country?  Quite simple really: Girl Talk is one of the most exciting, fun and energetic shows one could ever wish to attend.

Gregg Gillis is the creative master behind Girl Talk and has managed to make his way in the music industry through what appears to be a simple formula: take 5-10 great songs from the world of hip-hop, pop, indie, country, R&B and dance and mash them together into one brilliant track that sounds like a seamless creation. Gillis was originally an engineer who ditched his office job to blast a creative take on popular music into the headphones and speakers of many.  Thank god for the transition from the office to the stage because Girl Talk has managed to create one delectable music treat after another that is a fantastic listen regardless of taste.

While Girl Talk is certainly enjoyable to listen to on one’s own, there is something truly fantastic going on when he is performing live.  Half of the audience is onstage with Gillis, who is dressed in a t-shirt  (which later comes off) and sweat pants, while the other half is dancing like mad men (and mad ladies) and focusing, with admiration, at the creator of such awesome music.

As with any concert there are songs you just can’t wait to hear.  For Girl Talk, however, there are moments that are anticipated.  When Lil’ Wayne raps over Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares to You,” the feeling of elation and the realization that something truly awesome is happening takes place and you can’t help but jump up and down and scream!  Girl Talk creates an atmosphere at his concerts where a true celebration of music takes place.  People sing along to parts they know, scream at parts they love and never, ever stop dancing.  The feeling that comes with all of Gillis’ creations is infectious and nothing short of one fantastic experience after another.

Whether you agree with the methods behind Girl Talk’s creation of music or not, it is, in every way, a show you can’t miss.  Check out more tour dates and see if GirlTalk will be coming to your town to party!  If you will not be able to see Girl Talk live, buy his newest release, Feed the Animals, out now on illegalart; it’s a guaranteed delight to your ears.
