punchbrothers The Punch Brothers Get a New Bassist

Bassist Greg Garrison has left the alt-bluegrass band Punch Brothers. The announcement was made today via the band’s website. Garrison performed on the band’s debut album Punch as well as bandleader Chris Thile’s last solo album How to Grow a Woman From the Ground. He has toured with the band for the past few years.

Garrison’s replacement is Madison, WI musician Paul Kowert (he’s in the center in the picture above). Little is known about Kowert except he graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He has big shoes to fill in the band, but I’m sure he’ll do just fine.

The Punch Brothers have a slew of US dates extending well into 2009 that will prove to be a suitable test for Kowert’s chops. Check out the dates here.

While you’re at it, check out the Punch Brothers recent Daytrotter session that features an excellent cover of the Wilco song “Poor Places.”
