Coldplay ignores Joe Satriani’s charges of plagiarism
Joe Satriani commented, for the first time, on suing Coldplay for allegedly plagiarizing his song “If I could Fly”.
In an interview for Music Radar, Satriani clarifies that he only is taking the case to court because, at this point, Coldplay has ignored him.
“Everybody assumes I’m trying to go after these guys in Coldplay, as if I’m doing this with malice,” he says, “that’s the furthest thing from my mind. I’m just doing what I need to do as an artist, to protect what’s mine, to protect those feelings I put down in song.”
“I did everything I could to avoid a court case with this situation. But Coldplay didn’t want to talk about it. They just wanted this whole thing to go away. Maybe they figured this little guitar player guy will leave them alone after a while, I don’t know,” he added.
Satriani mentions that as soon as he heard the song, “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay, he knew it was his own work of art. He describes it as a “dagger right through the heart”, stating that he received numerous e-mails from friends that agreed it was a “rip-off”.
“Everybody noticed the similarities between the songs. It’s pretty obvious.”
To date, Coldplay has yet to comment.
