For a show that started as a rival to the traditional New Year’s fare, New Year’s Rockin’ Eve has sure changed.  The show originally had artists that challenged the establishment – one of the first shows was hosted by George Carlin – but now none of that remains, as can be seen in the choice of co-host Ryan Seacrest and the artists who will perform this year, including Jesse McCartney, Fall Out Boy, and the newest additions, Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers.

The only people who might possibly watch the show now are pre-teen girls.  I can understand ABC cutting out the teen- through middle-age markets because those people are probably doing something more fun than watching their boring show (although a lot of those people will at least be watching the ball drop, if not more) and deciding to make the show for a different audience.  But this choice doesn’t even make it a good show for pre-teen boys, much less the girls’ parents or anyone without anything else to do.  I blame Ryan Seacrest for destroying the show as part of his campaign against all good music, but ABC should have fought where FOX just gave in.  What a disgrace.
