EP Review: Jeffree Star, “Cupcakes Taste Like Violence”
By Lindsey DardenJeffree Star‘s “Cupcakes Taste Like Violence” EP is an immensely techno, uber elektroklash, overtly self-indulgent hot pink cotton candy explosion. Just one concerted look at Star’s Myspace photos will set the stage for the sexy, scandalous, off-color audibles to follow – a description apparently of his preference. With an outspokenness clinging like a second skin to his procured status as self-made celebrity, the world according to Star seems to be that ‘if it isn’t about me, then it simply isn’t’.
First-time listeners might find Star’s sound akin to “Your Woman” by White Town, but the comparisons will end there, thanks to much more gall and various aesthetic applique. Having taken on multiple roles of model, make-up artist, fashion designer and singer-songwriter, it’s taken more than the usual level of initiative for Star to have achieved what most others would gladly brown-nose through years of red tape for. Only a fool would think think that he doesn’t deserve it.
“Cupcakes Taste Like Violence” is available in stores today, December 9th, 2008.
Recommended tracks: “Cupcakes Taste Like Violence” and ”Picture Perfect!”.
