ODD NEWS: Cardinal against Madonna
With a headline that would have meant heresy 30 years ago, a former Chilean cardinal, Jorge Medina, has gone to the Chilean press some with bad things to say about the popstar’s first concert in the country. Medina accused Madonna of causing Chilean children to think “impure thoughts” and display an “enthusiasm of lust,” charges made particularly poignant by their venue: a memorial for former dictator and human rights abuser Augusto Pinochet, where Medina gave a speech.
Medina is apparently pretty high up in church circles, having been chosen to announce Benedict XVI as the new pope back in 2005. He seems like a bad guy, though, he also mentioned during his speech that he wanted something done about the abuses under Pinochet’s regime. His comments about Madonna are 20 years late, but make me wonder about the state of Chilean pop music – if Madonna is scandalous, what is the rest of the country’s music like? Perhaps an investigative report is in order.
