BeatCrave Fav: Laura Marling

It’s a shock to discover that Laura Marling is only 18 years old. Her music embodies wisdom far beyond her years as she gently strums folk-pop rhythms underneath her meticulous tales of love, depression, and hope. Although she is young and those crystalline blue eyes underneath the lightest of blond hair are the greatest concentration of wonderment you’ll ever come across, her lyrics are not fair as her porcelain skin. Within those beautifully told stories, there is a strong-willed soul similar to the great Joni Mitchell and Vashti Bunyan; this alone shatters her association with fragility.
Marling is a former member of Noah and the Whale, but she has also toured solo with many notable indie acts such as Adam Green and Jamie T. Her debut album, Alas, I Cannot Swim, is filled with unearthly concepts and titles such as her latest single “Night Terror.” Again, it’s completely confounding to know that Marling is still in her teens, because with all the intimacy and mystique, she’s musically re-birthed the gothic beauty of the Bronte sisters.
