Buddy Miles, the rock and R&B drummer, singer and songwriter whose eclectic career included stints playing with Jimi Hendrix and as the lead voice of the California Raisins, the animated clay figures that became an advertising phenomenon in the late 1980s, has died. He was 60.
Buddy Miles, the well known drummer, singer, and songwriters, died on Tuesday of congestive heart failure as 60-years-old at him home in Austin, Texas.
Miles developed his love from drums when he was a toddler, and by the time he was 12-years-old he was playing in his father’s jazz band. Soon after he became a session player and sideman to many famous R&B groups and musicans including Hendrix, Ruby and the Romantics, Muddy Waters, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santa and the Delfonics. In the 1980’s he became an advertising phenomenon for the lead voice in the Californian Raisins clay figure animation.

In her second album of covers, Chan Marshall transcends the realm of being a regular artist in order to make Jukebox an amalgamation of reinvention and a style of her own. Covering the likes of Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, and Janis Joplin, Marshall fuses the authenticity of the past with the innovative reinterpretation that defines our musical present. All songs on Jukebox are covers with the exception of two: “Metal Heart”, previously on the Moon Pix Album, and “Song to Bobby”, a collaboration between Marshall and Matt Sweeney.
Precision isn’t what Marshall goes for in Jukebox – she leaves it raw because music itself is raw. We hear the screeches in the guitar, the offbeat of the drums, and the pure emotion radiating from each song. Marshall keeps it simple, only a few instruments accompany her voice, and although simplicity can sometimes prove detrimental, Marshall uses this compositional approach to her advantage.

One needs to gird oneself for a day at a museum. Or at least, I do. It takes a lot for me to stand and shuffle around for hours, flashing back to my one art history course, hoping terms like “˙High Renaissance” and “Dadaism” can be recalled with a sense of meaning. Since moving within walking distance of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, I’ve seen a goodly amount of construction over the past six months. All in preparation for the institution’s new extension, ominously referred to as “Phase 1 of LACMA’s Transformation.”
With their unfortunate acronym LACMA, can sound more like a lactation condition than a repository of cultural treasures. The jewel of the newly opened extension is BCAM, the Broad Contemporary Art Museum. By the time I arrived, late Sunday afternoon on opening weekend, the place had sold out for the day. A modest line snaked around an escalator, since there did not appear to be any ground entrance. From the outside, the building doesn’t appear particularly innovative. Not like the new contemporary art museum in New York, the Bowery-squatting New Museum. The BCAM structure fits in with the rest of LACMA, with a sandy exterior. Only the fire engine red metal poles gave the structure some distinction. In the south plaza are closely spaced antique-style lamp posts facing Wilshire. My friend mused on how long it would be before the sculpture is defaced.
