So… it’s 7am Friday morning, I’m sitting at work, still tired from watching Be Your Own Pet destroy last night at the House of Blues- Anaheim.
But enough about me, how about about you? What are you going to do with your economic stimulus check? Savings? Gas? Credit Card Debt? Bail? Pfft to all of those I say. You need to go see a concert. “But Brian,” you say, handing me a cup of coffee in bed, “how do I learn about all the wonderful concert on sales I can use my stimulus check on?” Well, just call me your messiah…
Concerts on sale for this weekend:
- Last time she played LA, she refused to turn on the AC at the Staples Center to help reduce global warming (no, I’m not making that up). Now, Madonna will take her live show outdoors with a just announced show at Dodger Stadium on November 6th. You can buy tickets on June 1st. Yes I know, it’s not this weekend, but I tell you this so you can start saving as tickets will run you between $95-$350. That could buy a lot of air conditioners.

Sunday nights on the Sunset Strip do not live up to the hype of their heyday many moons ago, but nonetheless, L.A.’s own funk/rock outfit Casxio managed to put on an energetic set at the Key Club. The band hit the stage on time, a shocker in and of itself, and then proceeded to deliver a healthy and concise set of the “Casxio sound.”
For those not already in the know from their previous LA Cityzine interview, Casxio (pronounced Ka-see-oh), was one of our “Get to Know LA Bands” features. Surely, a band described in print, or experienced via MP3, deserves a look in a live setting.

“Tonight I want you to think of us as scientists who are coming and just experimenting on you,” Jemaine warns audience members after admitting how nervous he is about the new songs he and Bret are about to share. The crowd cheers and laughs warmly clearly excited and honored to be the chosen guinea pigs for Flight of the Conchords’ musical experiment.
Flight of the Conchords‘ special appearance this past Monday night at Largo was not publicized ahead of time, but word eventually got out and drew throngs of eager fans. The lucky few that made it inside the intimate, dimly-lit venue reserved one of the (only one hundred seats) available a month ago or were among the first 30 people to line up on Monday evening for standing room at the bar. It was the final show at the popular L.A. music club before Largo relocates in early June to the Coronet Theatre on La Cienega. Comedian Greg Proops emceed the evening, opening with terrific stand-up and banter that included a guest appearance by comic Drew Carey and a surprise phone call from actor John C. Reilly on speaker phone. Largo’s genius gem musician Jon Brion also played a couple songs before Flight of the Conchords took the stage.

So it’s the week after Coachella. My feet still hurt, my head remains nicely bronzed and some of my friends may still be stuck in the parking lot. Due to the work god’s putting the Hammer of Thorr down on me upon my return I was unable to write a proper review of my Saturday in the desert. But for those who were wondering: In brief: Dredg was great; Devotchka was good but out of place; Death Cab for Cutie played with every ounce of energy they had; MGMT was interesting; Kraftwerk bored me; Portishead was a revelation; Flogging Molly was the most fun I think I’ve ever had at Coachella (big up to everyone who joined me at the front of the stage); and I left before Prince (I know he was amazing, I just didn’t have any interest). So now that all that is out of the way, it’s time to focus on the future. The not-so-distant future. Here is a list of on sales for this weekend:
