LA.CityZine brings you band, the Absolute, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. As I sat down for pizza with the guys, I soon realized, for a very new band, they’ve got the roots and wisdom of musicians who have been doing it for decades. Phil Ross (vox/guitar), James Haworth (vox/keys/guitar) and Anthony Paul (drums) have had some major epiphanies within their musically genial mindsets. Refusing to write songs that fill in check boxes for the music industry these days, the Absolute brings you rock music that has a sense of rebirth yet also envelopes you in familiarity as they add a touch of retro elegance. With vocals that combine the likes of Thom Yorke, Stephen Malkmus (if he actually sang notes) and dare I even say it – Bono, along with a splash of keys and beats that will blow your mind, this band brings something different to the table.
Their EP, Good News, is only 6 tracks but manages to give you the overwhelming sense of musicianship that many indie rock bands are lacking these days. Swelling melodies and harmonies ride on top of raw guitar hooks and drums that drive the tracks until you can’t take it anymore. the Absolute provides this musically sensual high and release through their MySpace, so be sure to check it out.

If you’re looking for a site for info on L.A. bands and their gigs, you can’t do any better than Loudvine.com. Started by a group of people, who just like you, were looking for a one-stop source for all the concert information they wanted for the city.
Loudvine operates similarly to any other social networking site. You can create a profile with information about yourself and add friends and bands that you are a fan of. There are separate sections to search for fellow fans and to search for artists. On each profile, you can see a person’s or a band’s favorite genres and bands so that you can compare tastes and find something you might be interested in. Bands also have some of their songs and gig information.
Venues have their own section where they can list information about their location and upcoming gigs, as well as information about the music they typically offer.

So before I start on the on-sales for this weekend, I wanted to give you a little heads up on something cool that is taking place (which I learned thanks to Ben Werner of the OC Register- where I get most of my on sale news from anyway- they do good work over there, what can I say). Super-Hyper-Mega-corporate concert giant Live Nation has decided to give fans a break on some of the summers hottest (or most struggling and undersold?) concerts with a $10 “Fan Appreciation Day” sale. That’s right: for one day only tickets some of your favorite (or not) concerts will be on-sale for only $10. This of course does not count service or facilities fees (which will easily double the ticket prices) and the tickets will be in the back of the venue, but it’s still a pretty good deal. While a lot of country and middle of the road rock acts are included, there are a few decent shows included in the list:

LA.CityZine brings you band, Rumspringa, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. You may have already heard about them through our review of their EP. You may have also heard about them through word of happy mouths because of their successful Echo residency this past June. Joey Stevens and Itaru de la Vega are two cool guys making groovy, danceable, and rockable music. Think of Devendra Banhart dancing in a club and split into two people. Already hailed as the best kept secret in LA, Rumspringa continues to play shows around LA with their multi-genre tunes.
Still haven’t seen these guys live? It’s okay. They’ve got a show down at the Detroit Bar on Monday, July 21st at 9:00 pm. Go support them as they support Bloodcat Love by dancing your feet off. Can’t make it then, either? There’s more to come. There always is with these guys. For now, here’s your chance to get to know the duo by checking out their video of “Goldmine” and their interview with LA.CityZine below.

Pauley Pavilion normally hosts the UCLA Bruins during basketball games, but Saturday night it was transformed into a British shrine honoring The Who. Red, white, and blue spotlights shone as people walked in and slowly filled the seats. Viewers of all ages (literally) were in attendance, from the 300 dollar orchestra seats to the 65 dollar nosebleeds.
I was lucky enough to snag a ticket for this event, and wow, was it a performance of the century. A film montage started the tribute to The Who, with cameos by Billy Bob Thornton, Chris Martin, Dave Navarro, and Slash.
