neilyoung FREE MUSIC: Stream Neil Youngs Sugar Mountain: Live At Canterbury House 1968

In 1968 Neil Young was about to release his very first solo album, having just left his previous band Buffalo Springfield. While very few people actually knew who he was, Young was able to sell out a performance at the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Now, 40 years later Neil Young and Reprise Records are releasing the performance that night as part of the Archives Performance Series. The disc is expected to be released officially on December 2nd, but you can stream it now (as well as read more about that original performance) on NPR’s website.

CD REVIEW: Kira Fontana “The Inner Revolution”

kirafontana theinnerrevolution cover hi1 CD REVIEW: Kira Fontana The Inner Revolution

I happened across this Brooklyn-based singer, pianist, and songwriter Kira Fontana‘s debut album “The Inner Revolution” at Greenpoint Coffeehouse in Brooklyn, NY, reaffirming that the best thing about music is its ability to speak for itself when given the opportunity. Upon listening to the tracks, it became clear that the dreaded comparisons to nearly every songstress would be bound to creep up on the average listener – bearing a beef towards contemporary music or not. However apparent the skill of our most talented female composers, the double-standard seethes. It’s difficult to be an individual, let alone a female in an immense sea of already-dones, already-mastereds, and rather-redundants.

gliu4 INTERVIEW: Stacy* Clark is all about Apples & Oranges

I caught Stacy* Clark’s set at The Knitting Factory last week and was so blown away by her performance that I demanded an interview. Clark, a guitar playing singer songwriter, and her band performed a powerful set of guitar-heavy songs and heartfelt melodies from her album, Apples & Oranges. Clark is the Winner of the 2007 Orange County Music Awards for ‘Best Female Performer’ and ‘Best Female Artist’ 2006 Southern California Music Awards. Her music has appeared on the MTV and CBS television networks, and she has appeared on stage with Jacks Mannequin, and the Amsterdams. Thankfully, she took time out to answer a few questions.

INTERVIEW: Know Your LA Bands With Wait.Think.Fast.

BeatCrave brings you Echo Park-based band, Wait.Think.Fast., as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. Their name may derive from an inspirational phrase in the famous Siddhartha novel, but their sound is what currently gives inspiration and hope to fans and bands in Los Angeles.

Argentinian-born vocalist, Jacqueline Santillan, fronts the band on the keys while she sings optimism – sometimes in Spanish, sometimes in English – about the world that surrounds us. With Matthew Beighly, Apolinar Quentiro, and Thomas King collaborating with her, Wait.Think.Fast reels out rich electro-pop rock symphonies of spirited justification with an ethnic twist.
