Cancer Patients Become Musicians

At the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, patients can record songs in a studio provided by Purple Songs Can Fly, part of the Arts in Medicine Program. Since its inauguration in March 2006, 116 songs have been recorded at the fully equipped studio, some which have been aired on plane flights and even in space!
Purple Songs Can Fly, which is funded through donations, gives pediatric cancer patients the opportunity to reveal their inner talents, and helps them get through rough times. Some get interested in buying instruments and home recording equipment.
Many of the children in Purple Songs write songs about their pets, or families, or other bits and pieces of home life.
In an interview with Physorg, oncologist ZoAnne Dreyer said: “We’re trying to get kids through cancer, so the more fun we can make it, the better their response is to everything. It will give them a chance to get beyond this.”
Sometimes people don’t get a chance to really give music a shot, and it’s brilliant to start initiatives like Purple Songs. All you need is the right oppurtunity!
