Music Label Partners with Torrent Site
By Morelli
Open Your Eyes Records is working with What.cd, a site that distributes torrent files, to use peer-to-peer technology as their method of distribution. A bizarre twist for music industry rationale, this may prove to be a new way to deal with file-sharing sites, while taking advantage of their powerful distribution.
Open Your Eyes Records has wizened to the times, and decided that a partnership between labels and P2P sites is the best way to get heard. While What.cd is restricted to invited users, here’s a quote from the site:
“Open Your Eyes Records and What.cd are collaborating to revolutionize the industry landscape by making it clear that P2P technology and record labels can work hand-in-hand to accomplish their ultimate goals: getting artists heard and growing their fan base.”
It remains to be seen if other labels pick up on the idea. Open Your Eyes Records only has one artist, so we might not see a trend until more prominent labels get involved. However, file-sharing sites won’t go away, so why not join them?
