On Monday, we asked you about movies that involved music but weren’t actually musicals. Today, we actually ARE wondering your thoughts on musicals. Before you start acting like you’re too cool for singing and dancing, read on to find out why we’re curious!

Musicals back in the day used to be all about jazz numbers, tap dancing, and making eyes at each other – very old fashioned – so we understand musical theatre is not for everyone even when they’re made into films. HOWEVER, you have to admit there have been some cool re-makes within in the last decade. The ones that really stuck with me were the modern musicals.

Moulin Rouge! was directed by the great Baz Luhrmann. Nicole Kidman surprised us with her vocal range and well, Ewan McGregor, was absolutely perfect for the part. Not only did the film use contemporary songs from Nirvana, David Bowie, and The Police, but Luhrmann did not let us down with his visual masterpiece.

Once was an indie favorite when Glen Hansard (of the Irish rock band, The Frames) and Marketa Irglova were cast as the leads. This film quickly rose to fame because of its subtlety – most people didn’t even know it was a musical when they went to see it! They also went on to win an Oscar for the song, “Falling Slowly,” and Irglova made a great speech about how great indie music was.
