In the Digital Music Report filed by the International Federation of Phonographic Industry’s (IFPI), the group estimates the 40 BILLION files were shared unlawfully online during 2008, making 95% of the music downloads made online illegal.
The IFPI claims to have removed up to three million links to unlawful music downloads over the course of 2008, a huge jump from the only 500,000 they removed in 2007. The group called on Internet service providers and local governments to start to crack down on illegal downloaders.
John Kennedy, Chairman of the IFPI said: “Governments are beginning to accept that, in the debate over ‘free content’ and engaging ISPs in protecting intellectual property rights, doing nothing is not an option if there is to be a future for commercial digital content,”
Despite all that illegal downloading the IFPI claims the digital music business grew a whopping 25% in 2008, making the sixth straight year in a row the business has seen significant growth.
