‘Come With Music’ (CWM) is Nokia’s newest foray into the music business. At this year’s MIDEM, the world’s largest music industry trade fair, Nokia advertised that handset users who subscribe to CWM will have unlimited access to millions of tracks for download. After the success of Apple’s iTunes, mobile phone giants are integrating subscription based music services instead of pay-per-song models, and setting the new standard. Other manufacturers, like Blackberry and Sony Ericsson, are rushing to implement their own music services.

Available in the UK since October 2008, Nokia users can opt between a monthly 40 pound (58 dollars or 42 euros) subscription to CWM, or just buy a new Nokia cell phone and receive a free 12 or 18 month subscription, included in the price. The music downloaded is possible to play on other devices, and never expires.

The music industry suffered in 2008, internet piracy and poor album sales are directing major players to the exploration of new business models. Sony Ericsson’s ‘PlayNow’ music service follows Nokia’s lead, with a pilot program in Sweden, also offering unlimited free downloads. Blackberry, with its recently launched ‘Blackberry Storm’, is also determined not to be left behind.

In Japan, 90% of all digital music sold is downloaded to phones, and the American market is expanding. Nokia’s senior executive, Tero Ojanpera, said “2009 will be a very, very big investment for us in music“. Nokia plans to launch CWM in Australia, Singapore and Europe during 2009.

While this marks an evolution in music consumption, it remains to be seen if users will adhere to the new trend. Will the expense be worth the service, and will it stop users from downloading illegally?
