Nine Inch Nails Album Released for Free Download
Jan 27, 2009 - By Morelli
The newest Nine Inch Nails album, entitled The Slip, is available as a free application under a Creative Commons license on Playapp.com. The downloadable PlayApp contains 10 extractable 192 kbps MP3 songs, and 14 high resolution JPG pictures.
The new format is perfect for album releases, as PlayApps are single file, custom multimedia programs that can contain music, pictures, lyrics, and video. Most people like to have physical CD’s because of the collection factor, but with PlayApps, it’s now possible to download a ‘complete’ album with artwork and extras, not just the songs.
This business model is sure to catch on, given the drop in CD sales and the collectability of PlayApps. The Slip is an easy-to-use application; it opens like a normal music player, with the standard “play” buttons, and from a simple menu you can access song lyrics and extract all songs and images.
The album is electronic rock, in the NIN style, with industrial beats and distortion. Check it out!

Not only does that seem finicky, but it also sounds a little like copyright protection. [...]
