Physics Rap Gets 4 Million Views
By MorelliKate McAlpine, 23, who used to work in the press office of CERN, wrote the rap song during her 40-minute morning commute to the Large Hadron Collider. The YouTube video has grown in popularity and generated an enormous amount of discussion, heightening awareness about physics.
James Gillies, CERN spokesman says:
“We love the rap, the science is spot on, and all the feedback that’s come to me from physicists is positive. I think that Kate is a little bowled over.”
The instrumental, vocals, and lyrics are available here. Here’s what Kate herself had to say:
“Some more academic people are not too happy and they think it kind of cheapens the science and dumbs it down. But I think mostly people are excited to have this rap out there. And a lot of people at CERN just think it’s great, so that’s exciting.”
In case you missed the event, the Large Hadron Collider malfunctioned during its initial power up on September 10. The world’s largest and highest energy particle accelerator is set to be operational in July 2009.
