As Death Cab for Cutie strutted their musical genius down the red carpet the baby blue ribbons attached to their lapels caused a quiet murmur among fans and Grammy talent alike. Turns out the ribbons were not in support of curing any disease or ending a war. Instead, the boys of Death Cab informed those curious about the baby-blue that they and the ribbons were there for a different kind of disease.

“We’re here to raise awareness about Auto-Tuner abuse” stated Death Cab front man Ben Gibbard “I think over the last 10 years, we’ve seen a lot of good musicians being affected by this newfound digital manipulation of the human voice, and we feel enough is enough.”

“Let’s raise awareness,” he continued. “Let’s stop this, let’s bring back the blue note, and let’s really try to get music back to its roots of [having] actual people singing and sounding like human beings.”

With nearly every new artist’s voice being manipulated to “perfection” in the studio with Auto Tune the beautiful imperfections that make great vocalist truly memorable are being lost just so less money and time can be spent during the recording process.  I agree with Death Cab for Cutie, this is a trend that needs to be stopped.  Too many artists are using the machine as a crutch and it’s begining to show in the quality of music being produced.

What do you think?  Is Death Cab for Cutie fighting for a righteous cause?  Or should they be auto-tuned out?

uh something everyone should keep in mind:
The singer in "follow you into the dark" is using some pretty extencive autotune to be protesting it so…
