High-tech Gloves Help to Learn Piano
By Morelli
Kevin Huang, from the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology, has conceived a glove that vibrates to prompt which fingers to play a song in real time, with the objective to train a piano student’s muscle memory along with the music.
It’s essentially a golf glove with five vibrating motors that are powered by a battery that’s hooked into. The glove has a wireless link to a PC, and sends a sequenced signal to the motors, creating the impression that your fingers are playing. Huang says that “you can literally feel the notes.”
Preliminary studies show that users learn basic songs quicker, and Huang wants to expand the technology to other instruments. Also, the gloves can be used away from the piano, making it easier to practice muscle memory.
Perhaps piano instruction, an area of specialization that rarely sees development, might finally get a taste of new technology to aid in the teaching of the next generation of musicians.
Is this a revolution in music teaching? Should piano instructors be worried?
