Glastonbury Names Leaking Out
By Matt Unangst
The Glastonbury music festival, UK’s top music festival, doesn’t handle things the way American music festivals do. Instead of telling people the make-up of the year’s lineup, the festival’s organizers sell tickets before anyone knows who will be performing. It seems to work, as the tickets sold out quickly this year, even though the festival requires people who want tickets to pre-register, which requires the submission of contact information and a passport photo. If that happened in this country, people would complain like crazy that the festival couldn’t legally collect such information.
On to the lineup. The festival usually manages to keep information about who is performing under its own complete control, releasing names every few weeks leading up to the start date of June 24th. One band, however, broke the festival’s control. Franz Ferdinand listed the festival as a show date on their MySpace page over two weeks ago, an announcement quickly noticed by their fans and confirmed by the festival organizers. Now, the first willful announcement has been made – Bruce Springsteen will headline the festival, playing the main stage on Saturday night, the night before his show in London’s Hyde Park. So Springsteen continues on his tour of taking over the world with the most visible performances in both the U.S. (the Super Bowl) and the U.K. (Glastonbury) this year.
More announcements from Glastonbury will come over the next few months. Many other names have been rumored as possible performers, Neil Young and Blur the most famous among them.
