LOST in Indie Rock – Which Indie Rockers Would Play Lost Characters
By James

Remember in high school when your English teacher would make you write compare and contrast essays? Well, for some reason I always tried to sneak just a comparison paper by her – I hated writing the contrast part. Something about how if two things are inherently different, its more fun to find similarities than to point out the obvious differences. I love comparing books to movies, movies to TV shows, apples to oranges (they’re both round) – hell, whatever comes to mind. This article is aimed at taking my two favorite things in the world and smashing them together: LOST and music.
1. John Locke: Sufjan Stevens

Locke and Sufjan have a lot in common: they both are men of faith, have a certain level of mysticism, and have zillions of people pondering their next move. Sufjan’s 50 States project is kind of like the equivalent of Locke’s journey to unlock the Island’s secret; although admittedly only Locke’s quest may actually come to fruition.
2. Jack Shephard: No Age

Jack and No Age: Both leaders of their respective scenes and both possessed with strong conviction. It doesn’t hurt that both entities are my personal favorites – but we all know that Jack (at least crazy Beardo Jack) brings the noise rock (Pixies, In Utero-era Nirvana.) I can definitely picture Randy Randall giving the “live together, die alone” speech.
3. Benjamin Linus: Beirut

Either as loners, or as an orchestrator of a larger group, both of these men possess a grandiose quality to them. Utilizing layers, they both display a very dense characteristic with their crafts (Zach Condon with his music, and Ben Linus with his devious manipulation.) Other similarities? If Ben played an instrument (other than piano) it would obviously be accordion.
4. Kate Austen: Neko Case

One is a badass singer who writes Murder Ballads and one is a badass runaway convict wanted for murder. Neko made her name performing on stage with a bunch of men (Neko Case and Her Boyfriends, Neko Case and The Sadies) and in earlier seasons, Kate continually had to prove her mettle to the male survivors.
5. Daniel Faraday: Grizzly Bear

Very technically savvy and unorthodox in their processes at times, Faraday and the Grizzlies share many similar qualities. If Grizzly Bear wasn’t already so good at what they do, I feel that at least one of them would have been a physicist. I’m not really sure how smart these guys are, but they definitely give off that impression. There’s also something about Faraday’s ruffled white shirt and black tie that brings Daniel Rossen to mind.
6. James “Sawyer” Ford: The Black Keys

Even though he’s from Akron, Ohio, Dan Auerbach sings like he could be a conman from Jasper, Alabama. Sawyer would definitely have to be a band with a more timeless, classic sound and who better than The Keys? Plus, Patrick Carney’s unhinged drumming style is a perfect complement to Sawyer’s temper.
7. Sun-Hwa Kwon: St. Vincent

Once you get past the gentle outward appearance of these women, you definitely realize that they both pack a punch. Sun’s turn to the dark side in recent episodes is a good match for Annie Clark’s hell-bent guitar playing. Did you also know that Clark speaks fluent Korean? …not really, I made that up.
8. Sayid Jarrah: Black Lips

Both are cold blooded, and both travel the world wreaking havoc in their paths: I tried to think of a band that embodied the killer instinct of Sayid, and the Black Lips were the first to come to mind. I’m not sure what Sayid’s partying habits are, but we know how well he can woo a woman. Oh, and MUSTACHES!
9. Jin-Soo Kwon: Sigur Ros

Not only is there a strong foreign language-barrier connection between these two, they both possess a very stoic quality. Sigur Ros’ brooding style is a good comparison to Jin’s focus and intensity (especially in earlier seasons.) Jin’s seldom-displayed playful side could also equate to “Gobbledigook.”
10. Hugo “Hurley” Reyes: Daniel Johnston

In and out of mental institutions, both men definitely contain the “more than meets the eye” element. Johnston will be remembered as one of his generation’s most interesting song-writers and visual artists – and Hurley quite possibly contains the answer (or at least a good portion of it) to the Island’s puzzle somewhere in that gigantic noggin. If only Daniel would write a song about the Numbers, this could all go full circle!
Do you agree or disagree? Who would Desmond be? Charles Widmore? Richard Alpert?

A lot of creative thought went in to this! It's great.

These are good comparisons, worthy of many hours of thought, but my first thought is that…
Charles Widmore is Brian Eno, they are both British and balding and kind of behind the scenes in a great big scheme, I could see Brian Eno looking for a mysterious island, while everyone else is paying attention to his generative music and producing (i.e. Widmores other business fronts)
Juliet might be Emily Haines from Metric, they are both blonde and tough. Juliet was also part of the others just like Emily Haines is occassionaly part of Broken Social Scene (they might be the Others of the rock world)

Generally a good list, although I was quite disappointed to see Sigur Ros as Jin, as they would've made much more sense for the unused Desmond.
You cited Jin's stoicism and "brooding style" as reasons for the the correlation, but what about the raw emotional intensity that define both Sigur Ros and Desmond?
Simply put, what is easier to picture: a) Jonsi beating up a Korean businessman in front of his children or b) Jonsi crying on the phone during "The Constant"?
Otherwise a fun list, as I especially enjoyed the Sawyer/Black Keys and Hurley/Daniel Johnston entries.
Looking forward to the TRL edition with Boone/Fall Out Boy and Walt/Bow Wow.
