Beatles to Be Next Rock Band
By Matt Unangst
The Beatles (or what remains of them), in their first move ever to embrace new technology, came to an agreement with MTV Games to be the stars of the next Rock Band last October. No further announcements had been made until now, when a press release from MTV Games, the designer, was released today stating that the game will be released for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii on September 9, 2009, a date easily remembered by pretty much anyone. The game will take players through the career of the Beatles, from Liverpool to the world’s biggest stages.
The game itself will cost $59.99, but a special limited-edition package will be made to get as much money out of people as possible with instruments based on some that were actually used by the Beatles, which is kind of cool, until you realize that what you bought was just a cheap plastic replica that is going to break and doesn’t really play music. The sellers are offering “premium content” to people who pre-order the game, drumming up customers in what promises to be a weak year for video game sales.
Paul McCartney must need money again. The Beatles had been so protective of everything until the last couple of years, now they’ve almost over saturated us with products they’re involved with. They’re approaching a status where people are sick of hearing them and want them to go back to the old Beatles. Hopefully the game will have more songs than the regular radio Beatles fare, but probably not, at least without an extra charge beyond the cheap $59.99 for the game.
