Review of Take Action Vol. 8 Compilation CD/DVD
By Kara
Take Action Volume 8 is a compilation CD/DVD released by Hopeless Records and their non-profit organization, Sub City. The Take Action compilations benefit DoSomething.org. With each sale, 5% of the proceeds will be donated to DoSomething.org. The goal of DoSomething.org is to empower the youth in our society, because they believe that young people know what needs to change within society, but they lack the means to do something about it. The organization donates money to young people to help them accomplish goals and make a difference within their community.
The CD includes tracks by Cute Is What We Aim For, Motion City Soundtrack, The Spill Canvas, Meg & Dia, Four Year Strong, and All Time Low. The CD includes songs previously unreleased by The Spill Canvas, Four Year Strong, and Meg & Dia. The variety of songs on the compilation is fairly diverse; spanning from a live recording of The Spill Canvas’s “All Over You,” to the electronically-inspired “Diamonds”, to Meg & Dia’s lovely, unreleased track “Halloween.” For the most part, the songs are upbeat and entertaining.
The DVD is a collection of music videos and concert footage from artists including Motion City Soundtrack, Plain White T’s, Hit The Lights, All Time Low, Rise Against, and Portugal, The Man. The DVD was as equally diverse as the CD portion; the type of videos differed from All Time Low’s Blink-182 inspired video “Poppin’ Champagne (Remix Video) to fights between the keyboard player and black, shadowy figures in Portugal, The Man’s “Lay Me Back Down.” The DVD includes previously unreleased videos by Rise Against and All Time Low. Motion City Soundtrack has the honor of having the same song, “Fell In Love Without You”, on both the CD and the DVD. However, the versions on the two are strikingly different. The DVD has a more acoustic version of the song; it really takes the song to a whole different stratosphere. The DVD concludes nicely with footage of two previous Do Something contest winners.
This compilation succeeded, in that, it is accessible to those who are not familiar with this genre of music. Normally, I don’t gravitate towards this genre of rock music, but many of these songs were very good. My favorite songs on the album were Meg & Dia’s “Halloween,” Anarbor’s “The Brightest Green,” and Ace Enders’ “Reaction”.
In conjunction with the CD/DVD, F.Y.E. is presenting the 2009 Sub City Take Action Tour. 10% of the ticket price will also be donated to DoSomething.org.
The Take Action 2009 Tour lineup is: Cute is What We Aim For, Breathe Carolina, Meg & Dia, Every Avenue, and Anarbor.

[...] Take Action Volume 9 is a potpourri of pretty acoustic sets and interesting remixes. This year, Hopeless Records and Sub City Records have come together to make a lengthy compilation featuring popular bands, all in the name of charity. For the past few years, these two record companies have released a number of CD/DVD compilations “to encourage young people to make a positive impact on the world,” and ever since they started back in 1999, Sub City has raised millions.
