MTV and VH1: Can The Music Come Back?

MTV is supposed to stand for Music Televison. Correct? So what the hell happened to all the music videos? Now we’re stuck with ridiculous MTV and VH1 (who is owned by MTV) reality shows like Bromance and and Rock of Love. We get it… People like drama, but most of the time drama gets old REALLY fast. That’s why the term “drama queen” has a bad connotation!

After realizing that their name is a joke, MTV says they are going to improve this situation by hiring a team to soley focus on weaving more music into their programs. However, this doesn’t solve the problem at all. They’re hiring Joe Cuello, the guy who “makes The Hills rock” (please), to head the Creative Music Integration team to find more ways to only “weave” music into their shows – not just present music by itself.

I believe I’m not the only one who misses actual music videos. Even Justin Timberlake expressed his dissatisfaction for lack of music videos at an MTV awards show a few years ago. Music televesion started out as a chance to feature a visual display of music and the best way to do this is to present music videos. Music videos not only promote the artists’ music but it is also a chance for them to show their artistic creativity outside of their songwriting. This can be achieved through coming up with the concept, their ability to act, or hiring a certain director to help. In a way, music videos help us get a sense of who the artist is and the only way we do this now is by going to YouTube or MySpace. What do you think? Is this “solution” just another problem?

Is Joe Cuello The Solution?

If all fails, I guess their online archive will always work, but why isn’t all of this new stuff already playing on my TV?
