Josh Freese Sells Mini-Golf with Rock Stars for $20,000
By Morelli
As we reported last week, drummer Josh Freese released his solo album, Since 1972, with a marketing plan that included a price “menu” that packaged the album along with extras like taking 3 items of your choice out of his closet, a private tour of Disneyland, getting drunk with Josh, and Josh doing your laundry. The prices ranged from $7, for just the album, to $75,000 for Josh to join your band for a month, amongst other goodies.
You might think: “there is no way this will sell.” But it has. As reported by his web site, the limited-edition $20,000 package, which included a round of mini-golf with Freese, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan and Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, is sold out. So are the $250 packages, which entitled buyers to a lunch date with Josh.
The drummer has played with the Nine Inch Nails, Devo and A Perfect Circle. He says that the $50 packages, which come with a personal “thank you call” from Freese, are selling well, with over 70 buyers as far away as England, Greece and Australia.
Josh says the fulfillment of his packages is a full-time endeavor. “It’s literally me, an assistant, my girlfriend and our nanny,” he told Wired. “Just trying to coordinate the lunches is a lot of work…. This is going to be my job for a while.”
So is the marketing ploy a feasible way to sell music? His fans seem to think as much, and I begin to imagine luncheons with my favorite artists, if they offered to sell the opportunity. Check out the full price menu, and tell us which package you would pick, as well as other artists you would like to see using the same strategy.
