Diplo’s Mad Decent Partners with Downtown Records

Indie label Mad Decent, created by Philadelphia-based DJ and producer Diplo, has made a partnership deal with another indie, Downtown Records.
Home to artists such as Bonde do Role, Brick Bandits, and DJ Blaqstarr, Mad Decent will join acts like Gnarls Barkley, Justice, Eagles of Death Metal and Santigold at Downtown, which already partners with A-Trak and Kid Sister’s Fool’s Gold Records. Dance music seems to be congregating under the same banner.
Diplo, best known for his work with M.I.A., will be releasing material from Philadelphia punk band Popo and London’sĀ dubstepper Rusko through the label. Even though Diplo told Billboard: “this is all new to me, making money,” he sure has an eye for a good deal, since Downtown Records, though independently owned, has ties to major labels Interscope and Atlantic.
Downtown Records recently signed on the video music game platform LoudCrowd, and will be releasing Mos Def’s new album The Ecstatic on June 9. Other than expansion and collaboration releases, will we see more depth in the line ups for upcoming performances? How will the labels be financially affected?
