Hatcham Social are an indie pop band who first met and formed in New Cross, London, and who have released a string of singles on indie labels since 2006. They are currently making headway in the mainstream media, with The Guardian describing them as ‘irrestistible’. The band are named partially after the Hatcham Liberal club on Queens Road, Peckham, and the Old English word ‘Hatcham’, meaning ‘a clearing in the woods’.

Their debut record ‘You Dig The Tunnel, I’ll Hide The Soil’ was released in March 2009 in the UK. It’s chock full of modern, yet sleepy, punk rock sounds and atmospheric chimes and bells and the occasional synthesizer. It seems like they lean in various directions without actually committing to a single style, giving them a healthy and varied sound that jumps from psychedelic to punk to rock. I was very impressed with their catchy and intelligent songs (initially, I thought they were just young upstarts). They have also taken great influence from story books and children’s literature (check out the “Influences” section on their myspace), most notably through their rendition of the Lewis Carroll poem Jabberwocky, which they performed live at their 100 Club gig with a performing arts group called SKIPtheatre. The band’s love of story books and children’s literature (and as a nod to the 1980s) influenced them in choosing to release two cassette tapes of their self-recorded material, ‘Found In The Woods’ (versions 1 & 2).

Despite being a relatively new band, these boys aren’t strangers to the music scene; they’re creative and they’ve been very well received by audiences and critics alike! Be sure to check ‘em out on myspace!
