the bigger lights CD Review: The Bigger Lights, Fiction Fever

The bio for The Bigger Lights, as stated on their LastFm page, describes their music as, “ an infectiously energetic sound that draws equal comparison to pop and arena rock” and I have to agree. It’s fast, and it definitely rocks. They’re a lot like a modern-minded Cheap Trick (anyone remember Cheap Trick?). Those with a keen musical ear will appreciate all the time signature changes and progressive elements in the songs. The music of The Bigger Lights is, without a doubt, some of the most fun I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to.

That being said, I do have a major complaint: the voice. Topher Talley, lead singer, has a whiney-pop-punk vocals that I absolutely can’t stand, but for some reason others seem to like. So although I feel like it grates on the ears, I do realize how they may be popular with a certain crowd, just not for me. The CD it’s is well put together, and if you can stand the screeching and you’re into groups like Simple Plan, you will definitely like these boys.

“Fiction Fever,” for me, is first and foremost about the music. It’s rare that you find really good rock music these days. The little boy punk whines kill it, though. On the positive side, the CD is rather reasonably priced through Amazon.

Fiction Fever tracklisting:

  1. Closer (Time Stops Breathing)
  2. Revved and Ready
  3. Apocalypse!
  4. Romance in a Slow Dance
