Concerts Tickets with PJ Harvey, Lollapalooza and more
By Brian Spiegel
Geez, maybe its the post Coachella hangover, or the economy. Or maybe everyone is too excited about that Fighting movie this weekend to announce anything. Whatever the reason, there are not a lot of ways to spend your money on concert tickets this weekend. Probably a good thing too, because your mother called and said that shes worried about you and that you should save your money for a rainy day. And mothers are always right.
Though, honestly, I have no idea why your mother called me about you…
- PJ Harvey is one of those artists that has continued to make great music even after her “commercial” heyday of the mid-1990′s. Constantly reinventing herself (within her singer/songwriter persona), her current musical collaboration with British musician and producer John Parish, yielded last years critically acclaimed “A Woman, A Man Walked By”. PJ has announced a brief US tour with Parish which begins June 2nd in Atlanta, then hits all the usual metropolis’ before ending June 20thin Los Angeles. You can find dates and on sale info here.
- Lollapalooza planners and sponsors must be letting out a big sigh of relief after the reports that Coachella posted their 2nd biggest year ever even in these tough economic times. And with their strong just announced 2009 lineup, Lollapalooza should have no problem packing in the crowd for their 3-day festival in Chicago’s Grant Park from August 7-9. Headlining the show are Depeche Mode, Tool, The Killers, Jane’s Addiction, The Beastie Boysand Kings of Leon, with artists like Lou Reed, Rise Against, The Decemeberists, Silversun Pickups and dozens more filling the bill. Three-day tickets are on sale now for $190 (that’s only pennies per Chicago Cubs World Series-less season) and you can get tickets, and find the full lineup, here.
- So I’ll begin this by saying that this isn’t technically an on-sale and no official venues have been announced, but Green Day (who are becoming a little too self-important with the way they they have been slowly announcing details on their ”21st Century Breakdown” tour and album) have announced the routing for their summer tour which begins July 3rd in Seattle and ends with two shows in LA on August 25 and 26th. While the band could play stadiums (expect that next summer, frankly), expect a mix of amphitheaters and arenas on this tour. American Idiot was a classic record and while its kind of disheartening to see a band that has always gone their own way repeat themselves with another concert album, it will probably be one of the best of the year. With that said I have one request for the band: please think of some new ideas for this tour. No more just playing the same songs you’ve been playing for ten years. We get it, you build your own band during “Knowledge”. Frankly it stopped being interesting in 2001. You can stop that and play “Letterbomb” or “Prosthetic Head” instead. No openers have been announced, but either Alkaline Trio or Against Me! would be a great choice. Just saying, Billy.
- Piano-totting, Coldplay-sounding, Cleveland based Lovedrug has announced an East Coast/ Midwest summer tour with Straylight Run and Gool Old War opening. The tour begins May 13th in Chester, Pennsylvania and ends June 6th in Lawrence, Kansas. Find dates here.
