Deerhoof Releases Free Studio Recordings
By Morelli
New, Improved, LIVE is a multimedia series launched by New, Improved Recording and TheBayBridged.com. Every month, they invite a popular indie band to their studio in Oakland, California, and record an exclusive live session. Then they release all recorded material online for free in high-quality mp3s, videos, photos, and interviews.
The first edition features Bay Area indie group Deerhoof, which recorded a cover of “Let’s Dance The Jet” from the 1967 film The Day the Fish Came Out, along with three other songs from past albums Milk Man, and Holdypaws. The studio is top notch, so the sound is of the highest quality. Check out the behind the scenes video of “Let’s Dance The Jet”, and the free mp3s after the jump:
New, Improved, LIVE is taking the music business model in a new direction. By releasing all content free of charge, they are using the music as publicity for their studio’s services. If they consider it valuable enough, then everybody wins. Deerhoof gets exposure, and gives us anxious fans new recordings while we wait for the band’s next album. The release is also in line with the current trend towards free music and file sharing, and simply sidesteps all of the legal copyright hassle.
The free songs are “Milking” and “Giga Dance” from the album Milk Man, “The Great Car Tomb” from Holdypaws, and the aforemention “Let’s Dance The Jet”, all available in high quality (320kbps) at thebaybridged.com.
