Dressy Bessy: BeatCrave Fav
By Lindsey Darden
Named after the popular learn-to-dress doll, Dressy Bessy originated as one of the bands who branched from the Elephant Six Collective – six indie bands from Denver, Colorado as a result of various projects and here-and-there music-making among childhood friends.
The collective itself became known as the key influential indie bands of the nineties, before eventually morphing into the initial music label that provided the platform for Dressy Bessy’s now-thirteen-year music career. The band’s style is a pseudo-nouveau Yeah Yeah Yeahs meets the Pixies, fusing happy-go-lucky with sharp and witty, causing all sorts of pleasant internal smirks. Whether you’ve followed them for years or you’ve never heard of them before, their style is likely to be considered endearing to fans of cheeky indie rock on either end of the spectrum.
They know how to work the borderline pop song into nearly every one of their tracks, so if you think you’re one of those people who can’t stand the stuff, be prepared to retract your statement. The band released their latest album (“Holler and Stomp”) last fall; at this point they’re currently not on tour, but we’re thinking that with enough popular demand we’ll be able to squeeze some shows out of them. If that doesn’t do the trick, it’s likely that frontwoman Tammy Ealom’s bold-colored kiddie doll gear will.
