New Music: Costello, Coldplay, Interpol, The Japanese Popstars
By Jeffrey Hyatt
BeatCrave is always ready to get down with new music. Especially when it’s coming from a quartet of artists like we’re featuring today. Upcoming albums from Elvis Costello and Interpol’s Paul Banks, a live CD and download courtesy of Coldplay and a wild remix of Depeche Mode by The Japanese Popstars definitely fits the bill. Let’s take a quick peek at an eclectic batch of new music in the pipeline.
Elvis Costello’s new album “Secret, Profane & Sugarcane” is set for release June 2 and features four songs that revisit the singer-songwriters unfinished opera about the life of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The tracks are from Costello’s “The Secret Songs,” originally a commission by the Royal Danish Opera. The new album, produced by T-Bone Burnet, also includes a pair of tunes Costello wrote for Johnny Cash.
“I had the idea to work with my friend T-Bone Burnett and to make an acoustic record,” Costello told Billboard.com. “I was able to direct things and people took the initiative…and they played just beautifully. The playing of the musicians was so responsive it just flowed.”
Fans of Interpol will be happy to know that lead singer Paul Banks is giving fans the opportunity to download the first song by his new solo project, released under the moniker Julian Plenti. ‘Fun That We Have’ is the first track taken from Plenti’s upcoming debut solo album ‘Skyscraper’, set for release August 4th. ‘Fun That We Have’ can be downloaded via the Matador Records blog. Or you can find it at Plenti’s official site HERE.
The Japanese Popstars have remixed Depeche Mode’s next single, ‘Peace’. The remix is currently a promo track, same as their upcoming single, ‘We Just Are’. The band is prepping for a tour and festival dates, which include Glastonbury, Exit, Glade, Rockness, Oxegen, Fuji Rock, Wireless and Planet Love (supporting The Prodigy). The group hits the states at the end of May.
“LeftRightLeftRightLeft,” the free, nine-track live album Coldplay is giving fans who catch their summer tour, is now available as a free download on the band’s website. The live songs were recorded at various cites during the “Viva La Vida” tour.
The giveaway begins on the eve of the band’s North American tour, which kicks off tonight (May 15) at the Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida. There are early reports of Coldplay’s website getting overwhelmed with web traffic, so don’t despair if you experience a little trouble downloading the free tunes.
The disc and download is available until the band plays their final show of 2009, presently scheduled to be two, big concerts at Wembley Stadium in London on Sept. 18 and 19.
