Concert Picks: The Monolators, Japanese Motors, Nomo…
Friday, May 22, 2009 10:00AM - By Lindsey Darden

A little bit of different, and a little bit of the same – the bands selected this week for your weekending pleasure come with the hope that they provide audience members with a fair portion of both. Enjoy:
- Eagle Rock Bowling and Drinking Club Prom | Friday, May 22 | 8:00 pm | Free | All Star Lanes, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Something tells me that there was neither bowling nor drinking at your high school prom. Whether or not you had the joy or disdain of attending however many moons ago, the 2nd annual Eagle Rock Bowling and Drinking Club Prom (with a “Come Sail Away” theme) holds the potential of being an event to remember – all without the pressure of being the most popular kid in school! The evening will feature performances by The Monolators, Kid Infinity, Make Me, and DJ Cleaver. For more info, call (323) 254-2579.
- Japanese Motors | Friday, May 22 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | Free w/ RSVP | Studio B, New York, NY – Map | A little bit of surf, a little bit of Franz Ferdinand, the high-energy Costa Mesa, Calif., band will play with the Crocodiles. Click here to RSVP; for more info, call (718) 389-1819.
- Blue Turtle Seduction | Saturday, May 22 | 9:00 pm | $12-14 | Independent, San Francisco, CA – Map | Making a pit stop on their 16-states-in-1-month tour, the self-proclaimed “High-Altitude Bohemian Tribal Funk Grass” band will take the stage, with featured performances by The New Up, Blue Rabbit, and Jack Frost. Click here for tickets.
- Nomo | Saturday, May 23 | 9:00 pm | $8-$10 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Obviously we’re of the mind that music has the ability to move listeners; with elements of stylized funk and avant-jazz, Nomo’s sound is such where it is most definitely orchestrated, but there is more than enough room for improvisation. If only there were least simplistic terms to describe how much it parallels the human agenda – planned to an extent, with enough opportunity to let loose where least expected. The evening will feature a performance by Those Dancing Days. Click here for tickets.
- Brit and the Calvary | Sunday. May 24 | 7:00 pm | 21+ | $8 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY – Map | “Structured chaos” would be the best phrase to describe the first impression obtained by one listen to Brit Bora’s music stream. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter’s string and percussion arrangements manage to cause a rare tingle of excitement with minty-fresh interpretation of thought expressed via female prowess. Per the evening line-up, she will be preceded by Alex Brumel & Janel Elizabeth. Tickets will be available at the door; for more info, call (212) 260-4700.
