Brit & the Cavalry: BeatCrave Fav
By Lindsey Darden
Brooklyn-based band Brit & the Cavalry is a whirlwind of a group, I can tell you right now. Brit (on vocals) and the cavalry (wielding their musical instruments) come bearing a unique sound infusing rock, folk, and soul; at times they even come off as stealthily electronic. This smorgasboard-esque style flourishes within an ethereal encasement, almost as if we’re off in the woods and just happen to encounter a sprite who will spirit us away, no question. We just have no idea as to whether she’ll remain a faerie-queen or if she’ll morph into a hecubus during the process. Brit & the Cavalry explores the light and the dark side of emotion – love, exhilaration, self-exploration – and ties it to a format that holds the illusion of being free from structure.
For instance, the song “Hey There” from their EP, Chapter One, consists of hand claps, group singers, staggering string arrangements, and lullaby-like harmonies. All of which is seemingly simple enough when described; however, when coupled with varied pitch, tempo, and lyrically-painted visuals, that’s where things start to stir a little bit deeper in one’s subconscious. While it would be easy to convey similarities of Brit & the Cavalry to one Ms. Tori Amos, as an artist let it be known that such a comparison is not an thrown-about classification to come by.
I would easily consider it a tragedy were this unique brand of music to fall off the radar, and if you’re one to feel the same way, be sure to vote for them in Friday’s poll!
