pearljam Pearl Jam Debuts Get Some On Conan’s 1st Tonight Show

Pearl Jam debuted their new song, “Get Some,” Monday night with a thrilling performance on Conan O’Brien’s first night as host of The Tonight Show.

“Launching a show like this takes a lot of hard work, and one of the things that has sustained me over the past three months was knowing that at the end of our first show, I would get to watch a performance by one of the greatest rock bands in the world,” Conan O’Brien said as he introduced Pearl Jam.

The new song, quite the high-energy rocker, will appear on the group’s forthcoming ninth studio album, Backspacer, due in the fall.

Besides the late-night hype of appearing on Conan’s first show, talk of the band’s business future, and new relationships, has been a hot topic lately.

Pearl Jam, now without a record label after 18 years with Sony, will release Backspacer through various distribution methods, including a new deal with big-box retailer Target, which was confirmed this week.

The Target deal is not a wholly exclusive arrangement, which should help deflect some of the possible negative opinion of Pearl Jam’s new corporate partnership.

With talk of hooking up with an online retailer, a mobile partner, a gaming company and a network of indie retail stores, it’s obvious the band is fine-tuning the Target deal in their favor, allowing a greater amount of business freedom.

“Target ended up allowing us to have other partners,” Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis told Billboard. “We’ll be able to take care of all levels of the Pearl Jam fan,” says Curtis. “We wish we could tell the whole story right now, but all the deals aren’t done. Target was cool enough to realize that little independent record stores are not their competition.”

Just last week Pearl Jam recorded a Target commercial with director Cameron Crowe at Seattle’s Showbox Theater. They performed a new song called “The Fixer.”

Backspacer will be released internationally via Universal Music Group.
