Here’s something for those of you who like to simultaneously rock your face off and cherish the classics. The Vitamin String Quartet, a very well-known string quartet who plays renditions of popular songs, just released two of their edgiest albums today.

The first album titled Per_Versions is a collection and salute to some of the most popular indie rock artists to date. No Age, Animal Collective, and The New Pornographers are just a few of the artists they cover. You can check out the full tracklist and listen to samples here. Their version of “The Bleeding Heart Show” may be the song’s best cover I’ve ever heard from any artist altogether and that art (above) is awesome.

Their label, Vitamin Records, also released The Vitamin String Quartet Performs Radiohead’s In Rainbows. Every single track is transformed into lush string arrangements yet songs like “15 Step” and “Jigsaw Falling into Place” still have the raw drive Radiohead is known for. If you think those tracks are cool, then you’ll love how amazing the ballads sound when played by a string quartet. “Reckoner” is one of the most beautiful songs on In Rainbow but strings manage to present a silkier seduction with this track. Listen to a sample of this track and the rest of the album here.

To celebrate these brand spanking new releases, the Vitamin String Quartet is currently giving away 5 FREE copies of each CD. All you have to do is go to the Vitamin String Quartet Blog and follow the instructions. There are a variety of ways to win and it all seems pretty simple; you can use social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, sign up for their newsletter, or simply blog about the contest.

Cover artists are often overlooked but when they present a fresh approach such as this, it’s hard not to be intrigued. Take a listen and tell us what you think! Would you buy these both of these albums?
