Album Review: Saint Bernadette’s Word To The Lourdes
By Anet Hovhanesian
Bridgeport, Connecticut’s very own Saint Bernadette’s have released the first of three EP’s that are going to come out this year. They decided to name the album Word To The Lourdes for two reasons: One to represent the shrine in France where the band’s namesake first saw the Virgin Mary; two in honor of Madonna’s real-life daughter. Lead singer Meredith DiMenna’s says about her role model:
“In the 80′s, Madonna kicked the door down. She was powerful and positive and singing that women should express themselves.’”
Their new album is inspired by Meredith’s visions of heartbreak. The album was co-written by Meredith and her husband/bandmate Keith Saunders. Other band members include guitarist Joe Novelli, bass player Brian Anderson, and drummer Dave Valle.
First single “Already Gone” is a fast paced punk/pop anthem. The drums and guitar sounds come together to form a fierce melody to go along with Meredith’s smooth voice. It makes you want to get up and move to the sounds of the music. “Wrap It Up” has a similar up-beat tempo, as does the fun lady’s-man song, “He’s a Collector” which is the only song on the album that was written collectively by all band members.
My personal favorite was “Don’t Take This Away From Me” because it was the song that fully displays the pain in Meredith’s voice. The music is calm and her voice is as velvet-y smooth as ever. When she sings, “Every word I say is true, I can’t say the same for you,” you can tell she is a woman who has had her heart broken. The guitar work of Keith and Joe come together beautifully on this track.
You can tell Saint Bernadette is inspired and influenced by classic rock & pop sounds that span a couple of decades by listening to their new album. Word to The Lourdes is definitely worth checking out.
You can preview and buy the album from amazon for only $6.99.
