Who knew Evan Dando was so litigious? But mess with one of his classic, ’90s alt.-rock hits at your own peril. The lead singer for the Lemonheads filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles federal court last week accusing General Motors of using an unauthorized re-recording of the band’s song “It’s A Shame About Ray” in a television ad campaign.
Dando is seeking damages and a portion of profits from the 2008 TV campaign for Chevrolet and Buick models.
No word yet from General Motors on the Dando copyright infringement flap, what with the company recently declaring bankruptcy and all.
In non-legal, Lemonheads news, the band is presently touring the U.S. in support of Varshons, their upcoming new album, which features covers of songs by Wire, Graham Parsons, Townes Van Zandt and G.G. Allin, among others.
Varshons will be released on June 23rd from The End Records.
