Fast Company Gets Creative With Music ‘Biz List
By Jeffrey Hyatt
Lists: Pure conjecture but a nice way to get folks talking, or complaining. Fast Company has a creativity-inspired ranking that should be of interest to BeatCrave readers: The 10 Most Creative People in the Music Biz.
Writer Lynne D Johnson (and possibly other Fast Company staff) compiled this ‘creative’ list, which features rapper/producer DeAndre Way at number one, musician Brian Eno at number 10 and a solid assortment of executives, musical artists and digital media gurus in between.
Do I know if rapper/producer DeAndre Way is the most creative person in the music ‘biz? No, which is why I usually take these types of features as just good conversation starters – with people who care about this type of stuff. I also am not completely familiar with everyone on the list, so far be it for me to criticize their ranking.
Pharrell Williams at #5? Really? What year is this?
Here is the complete list:
- DeAndre “Soulja Boy Tell’em” Way, rapper/producer
- Tim Westergren, Chief Strategy Officer & Founder, Pandora
- Alexandra Patsavas, Owner, Chop Shop Music Supervision
- Gregg Gillis, Mashup artist
- Pharrell Williams, Musician
- A.R. Rahman, Composer
- Jimmy Iovine, Chairman, Interscope Geffen A&M Records
- Bart Decrem, Chief executive officer, Tapulous
- Dave Stewart, Musician and record producer
- Brian Eno, Musician
I noticed there were no writers, or websites mentioned. Perhaps the focus is primarily of those ‘in’ the music business and not the ones analyzing it. Fair enough.
And if you still need more lists to peruse, just last month Fast Company unleashed the 100 Most Creative People in Business list, featuring company presidents, street artists, musicians and bloggers. So for sure check that out.
But I’m not here to rant incessantly about the mostly fine 10 Most Creative People in the Music Biz list – rather to point out that yet a new list is available to check out and disagree with accordingly.
What do you think about Fast Company’s list? Is there anyone you’d like to see up there?
