Concert Picks: Amy Speace, Ben Kweller, PJ Harvey…
By Lindsey Darden
This weekend’s picks have license to take us away a la Calgon. The impending solstice is inching ever closer, pointing us in the direction towards mellow tunes reverberating within the walls of whichever venue is doing the hosting. Oh, those summer nights.
- Amy Speace | Friday, June 19 | 9:30 pm | Joe’s Pub (Public Theater), New York, NY – Map | CD release parties are fun. The mellifluous, unassuming East coast folk singer-songwriter will unleash her sophomore album [and therefore a huge portion of her heart via] The Killer in Me, and you – yes, you – could be there. Click here for tickets.
- Ben Kweller | Friday, June 19 | 8:00 pm | $17 | El Rey Theater, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Kweller deals a good hand at the country side of things on his most recent album, entitled Changing Horses, managing to retain a vocal affinity to classic rock – dare we say Jackson Brown? – and therefore his known indie rock style. Click here for tickets.
- PJ Harvey and John Parish | Saturday, June 20 | 8:00 pm | $39.50 – $49.50 | Wiltern Theater, Los Angeles, CA – Map | The widely-acclaimed, influential, sultry songstress and her oft-collaborator of obvious comparative talent are likely to charm the pants off everyone within a 300-meter radius. We hope with child-like anticipation that they’ll be showcasing the fruits of their most recent collective work, Black Hearted Love. Click here for tickets.
- Grizzly Bear | Sunday, June 21 | 9:00 pm | The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA – Map | Upon first listen of the second track from their most recent album, Veckatimest, entitled “Two Weeks”, we couldn’t help thinking of a hybrid sensibility of puppy love ballads and Tears for Fears… and we liked it. We approve of this fusion. For ticket information, call (415) 346-6000.
