The Dear Hunter at The Glass House: Concert Review
By Brian McConnell
Comprised of Casey Crescenzo, Erick Serna, Nate Patterson, Andy Wildrick and Nick Crescenzo, The Dear Hunter are an east coast act whose ”Act” albums are grandiose, epic tales of love, prostitution, escapism and death: themes that are not often easily expressed within the context of a 40 minute set opening for MeWithoutYou.
During their performance at the Glass House in Pomona, CA last night, The Dear Hunter exploded beyond the constraints of theme and delivered a live rock performance that proved to any naysayer or critic of the band that The Dear Hunter is far more than a studio band; they are also a group of six amazing musicians that put on a memorable show worth talking about.
Their entire set list was comprised of songs from all three of the “Acts” album including some new tracks from their forthcoming “Act III: Life and Death” (Due out June 23). With each song, the band showed incredible control over the songs never rushing through a particular tune but, instead, letting the audience saturate in every aspect of the music, lyrics, tone and rhythm comprising a particular track.

The Dear hunter also proved they could change a well known song just enough to make it fresh without losing any of the qualities that made it a fan favorite to begin with. Their newest interpretation of “The Oracles on the Delphi Express” was not only an example of their ability to evolve a song for the audience, it was also a definite highlight of the entire set. During this performance, all six band mates came to the front of the stage and harmonized in a rendition of the song that echoed the acoustic simplicity of bluegrass while never once losing The Dear Hunter flavor.
Overall, The Dear Hunter’s performance is one that will not soon be forgotten and, in many ways, a set that overpowered that of the headlining act. While MeWithoutYou is certainly a respectable band, The Dear Hunter have a sound that is so distinct and superbly unique that they shone with a radiance during their entire time on stage. If you’ve yet to be afforded the fortune of seeing The Dear Hunter play live, go out of your way to find a venue housing them, buy a ticket and prepare yourself for a show like few others you’ve ever seen before. If you have seen them live, share your experience with us and our readers!
